PartyCasino Wins Media Man Online Casino Award, by Greg Tingle - 30th December 2009

PartyCasino.com Wins Media Man Online Casino Award

PartyCasino.com has once again been awarded the Media Man and Casino News Media "Online Casino Of The Month".

The competition for the coveted award was intense again this month with massive bids from both Captain Cooks Casino and Virgin Casino, however there can only be one winner... ladies and gentlemen, that's PartyCasino.com

The award follows PartyPoker's EGR Poker Operator Of The Year and PartyGaming also made the shortlist for EGR Operator Of The Year. Last month PartyGaming's PartyPoker.com also won the Casino News Media "Online Poker Website Of The Month".

The Media Man - Casino News Media accolade is based on a combination of elements including user experience, innovation, trustworthiness, customer service, gameplay, affiliate program offerings, newsworthiness and company values.

PartyCasino.com is one of a number of PartyGaming brands.

The most popular PartyCasino.com games of late include Rambo, The Godfather, Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Mission: Impossible, The Terminator, Cleopatra, Sinatra, Thor, The Hulk, Monopoly, Resident Evil and Mega Fortune Wheel. Last month a German casino player won the Gold Mega Jackpot of almost $5 million dollars playing Mega Fortune Wheel.

The PartyCasino.com jackpot is currently approaching the $1 million mark. Players can also compete for the Marvel Hero Jackpot, playing the Marvel super hero themed online slot games.

PartyCasino's most recent game releases include Tarzan, High Noon and Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

PartyGaming CEO Jim Ryan has gone on record advising PartyCasino will soon feature more Hollywood blockbuster themed slots. A few in the know journalists and media agents have been recently tipped off that pro wrestling themed online slot games are in the works and that an all time classic movie adaption will be showcased in the PartyCasino portfolio within 3 months. Names been thrown around include Andre The Giant, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, but those names are only rumors, however a print feature did showcase Andre earlier in the year, indicating that there is substance to the rumor mill. In any event, PartyCasino already has the world's most impressive line up of Hollywood themed games, and more are just around the corner.

In other exciting PartyGaming news, PartyPoker.com is currently running qualifiers to the L.A Poker Classic in the United States. PartyGaming's recent purchase of the World Poker Tour company and assets enables PartyGaming to once again accept American based poker players, and they are hopefully of soon accepting American casino players also. Both websites accept most European, South American and Australian players.

PartyCasino.com and PartyPoker.com customers can also benefit from rewards and bonuses via PartyPoints and the Palladium Lounge. Be certain to check out the PartyCasino exclusive "Cash Machine" that is being championed as one of the greatest online casino promos ever.

Media Man, Casino News Media and Global Gaming Directory do have a b2b relationship with PartyGaming, as they do with dozens of other companies in the gaming and igaming industry.

PokerStars Guinness World Record Attempt Attracts 149,196 Players, by Dan Cypra - 28th December 2009

On a night when Full Tilt Poker’s software went down much to the dismay of players everywhere, PokerStars set the Guinness World Record for largest online poker tournament ever held. The event weighed in at 149,196 entrants.

The mark to beat was 65,000 players, set by PokerStars back in July, meaning that the site trumped the standing record by nearly 85,000. PokerStars was quick to put its record-shattering attendance into perspective, saying, “It would fill the Rose Bowl or Wembley stadiums and still have another 60,000 people with tickets waiting outside in the tailgating parking lot.” In addition, the attendance represented well over 20 times the field of the 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event and 30 times the number of rooms at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The Guinness World Record attempt was a $1 buy-in tournament that guaranteed $300,000 in the prize pool. It played out in less than six hours in a Turbo format and oskar69 earned an amazing $50,000 for first place, or 50,000 times his buy-in. Text found on PokerStars’ website admits, “We're sure oskar69 is happy about the ROI from the win today, as no deal was reached and the entire $50,000.00 was awarded for besting this massive field.” Second place went to Bommel222, who earned a not-so-paltry $30,000. A total of 30,000 players finished in the money.

Others who made the final table in the historic poker tournament included TLWPB (third place for $20,000), willis59 (fourth place for $10,000), kruglay (fifth place for $8,000), madmick62 (sixth place for $6,500), DS1982 (seventh place for $5,250), denmil53 (eighth place for $4,000), and bigsnapper7 (ninth place for $3,000). The top 16 players grabbed at least $1,000 for their 100-penny contribution to the pot.

The PokerStars Sunday Million, the site’s hallmark $215 buy-in weekly high-stakes poker tournament, drew 9,344 entrants yesterday, creating a prize pool of $1.8 million. In the end, PokerStars member coach6999 banked $266,000 for the win, defeating BBOY3110 heads-up. The second place finisher claimed a $196,000 consolation prize and the top 1,350 spots paid out. Others who reached the feature table in the Sunday Million included tsakalias (third place for $139,132), schnaggels19 (fourth place for $93,440), mystinen60 (fifth place for $74,752), OBVAMENTS (sixth place for $56,064), robvleugel (seventh place for $37,376), plusmillion (eighth place for $20,557), and Mr Puckey (ninth place for $13,082).

The Sunday Warm-Up, another $215 buy-in online poker tournament that played out on PokerStars yesterday, generated a field of 4,605 entrants, shattering its $750,000 guaranteed prize pool. In the end, NinjasTyle87 banked $144,000 for first place, while .dmmarquez finished with a $107,000 bankroll boost for second place. The top 675 players finished in the money and others who could be found jumping for joy on Sunday afternoon included JBlaze20 (third place for $75,983), montjeu8 (fourth place for $52,037), Comeback2008 (fifth place for $39,143), Steinapride (sixth place for $29,933), haneferd (seventh place for $20,723), ReadOnYou (eighth place for $11,513), and pokerwille (ninth place for $7,368).

Appropriately, PokerStars is the industry’s largest online poker site, according to PokerScout.com, boasting a seven-day running average of 27,800 real money ring game players. During its peak hours, nearly 50,000 call the site home. PokerScout.com claims that PokerStars’ traffic has grown by 37% year over year and, at the time of writing, which is late morning Eastern Time on Monday, 36,000 cash game players are seated. That figure represents more than double the number of players currently found on Full Tilt Poker, the world’s second largest site.

Full Tilt Poker’s $750,000 Guaranteed, Sunday Mulligan, and Sunday Brawl, among other events, did not play out on Sunday due to a software malfunction. Players were refunded based on their chip counts at the time of the crash. (Credit: Poker News Daily)

PartyGaming is the parent company of PartyCasino, established in 1997, and is the most successful online company in the world, listed on the London Stock Exchange and winner of numerous EGR Awards, in addition to Casino News Media and Media Man awards and commendations.

Players from most countries can access PartyCasino and PartyPoker. PartyCasino is ranked by many authorities as being the superior online casino for Australia, Europe and South America.

PartyCasino is hopeful of accepting paid American players in 2010, however PartyGaming made a successful purchase of the World Poker Tour late this year allowing players to become more familiar with PartyGaming products and services the world over.

Most games can be played for free or played for money and are available in a range of multi language and multi currency options. PartyGaming's call centre is open around the clock 24/7/365.

Jackpot offerings include Gold Mega Jackpot, Marvel Hero Jackpot and Super Hero Jackpot.

Major innovations at PartyCasino.com include Live Dealer and Single Wallet, and 2010 will see "Avatar" like technologies arrive.

Latest games include the Call Of Duty 4 slot and Melon Madness jackpot slot. 2010 will deliver more Hollywood themed classics, and rumors suggest to be on the lookout for games including pro wrestling also, be it Andre The Giant, Hulk Hogan or Ric Flair. Wrestling Legend Hulk Hogan actually purchased the rights to use the name "Hulk" from Marvel Comics in the 80's, but that's another story. Certainly Party do have positive history in wrestling, Hollywood and Marvel Comics circles. This is evidenced in the public domain not only by The Hulk slot game, but also by Stallone's Rambo slot, Tom Cruise's Top Gun slot and Schwarzenegger's The Terminator. Terminator Salvation features Australia's Sam Worthington, and insiders predict more Terminator games may be on the way.

PartyGaming is licensed and regulated by the Government of Gibraltar, with offices around the world, and have been at the leading edge of innovation, customer service and all round excellence for over a decade. Players and partners alike can be assured they are in safe hands at PartyGaming.

THQ And WWE Agree To Eight-Year Deal - 23rd December 2009

THQ and WWE have been tangled in legal disputes for half a decade over alleged racketeering and licensing shenanigans, but the litigation is officially over, and according to an announcement yesterday THQ will continue publishing WWE games for another eight years. The messy affair that involved the two companies and toymaker Jakks Pacific will end with a series of payouts, but both THQ and WWE voiced satisfaction with their new agreement.

THQ will pay $13.2 million to the WWE and $20 million to Jakks Pacific to resolve things, according to MCV. The settlement was followed by a new licensing agreement that should make court arguments a distant memory.

“This agreement ensures that WWE games will continue to be an important cornerstone of THQ’s annual release schedule for the long term,” THQ President and CEO Brian Farrell said in a press release. “We look forward to working directly with WWE to expand their brand in the video game space through continued game play innovation and increased online delivery of WWE content.”

WWE echoed those sentiments.

“This year’s highly rated 'WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010' video game demonstrates the innovation and creativity that THQ brings to WWE,” WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon stated. “This new licensing agreement will ensure that we continue our tremendous success in the video game industry in the years to come.”

PartyCasino Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is ready for action, alongside action slots, Rambo, Mission: Impossible, The Terminator, Tarzan and King Kong - 22nd December 2009

PartyCasino Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is ready for action, alongside action slots, Rambo, Mission: Impossible, The Terminator, Tarzan and King Kong.

PartyGaming's PartyCasino.com, widely regarded as the world's biggest and best online casino, now has Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ready for action just in time for Christmas, alongside other action packed Hollywood classics Mission: Impossible, The Terminator, Tarzan, King Kong and more.

Call Of Duty is quickly becoming one of the most popular video games of all time, and may even become one of the most popular online slot games ever, sitting next to the all time classic, Cleopatra.

Hollywood slot fans can also find more action in High Noon, Resident Evil, The Naked Gun and Top Gun, and then there's the Marvel Comics themed games, The Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man and Fantastic Four. Go for the Marvel Hero Jackpot and Super Hero Jackpot. Excelsior!, as Marvel icon, Stan Lee would say.

If true classics are your thing, try out Sinatra, endorsed by Frank and Nancy Sinatra's company, alongside the iconic Gone With The Wind and The Godfather. The Godfather is currently the most popular Gold Mega Jackpot slot game at Party and last month it went off at $5 million dollars. Speaking of classics, try out Monopoly, Cleopatra and Wheel Of Fortune.

Casino players might like to mix it up with some Blackjack, Roulette, and Baccarat, and check out the exclusive "Live Dealer" feature. Sister website and brand, PartyPoker.com is also ready both both new and seasoned poker players.

So, whatever your poison, slots, card games, table games or something else, check out the awesome new developments at PartyGaming's PartyCasino, and don't forget, most PartyCasino games can be played for free or played for money, and in a range of languages and currencies to suit your preferences.

Party's player rewards programs system is regarded as a world beater. Collect PartyPoints and have a look at the Palladium Lounge which has won favour with VIP's and high rollers.

In the new year PartyCasino will be releasing more world class games and just a couple of names being speculated include Andre The Giant, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, and a game that was seen by insiders as a predecessor of sorts to Avatar. Rest assured that action, Hollywood and virtual worlds fans will be blown away by 2010 offerings. Most European countries can access the online casino, as can Australians and Canadians. PartyGaming remains dedicated to provide an online casino service to Americans, and has recently acquired World Poker Tour, so gaming fans the world over can become more familiar with PartyGaming's numerous game offerings.

PartyGaming was established in 1997 and is listed on the London Stock Exchange. They have won a wide array of industry awards ranging from EGR Socially Responsible Operator of the Year to Casino News Media Online Casino of the Month.

Aliens vs Predator game ban overturned for MA15+ Australian release - 21st December 2009

The Australian ban on sci-fi video game Aliens vs Predator has been overturned by the Classification Review Board.

The game was initially banned due to graphic gore, but the Board has given it an MA15+ rating with the warning "strong science fiction violence".

The Board explained in a statement that the violent scenes – originally deemed too graphic for Australia due to the lack of an R rating for games – can be allowed at an MA15+ level as they "are not prolonged and are interspersed with longer non violent sequences".

"The violence is fantastical in nature and justified by the context of the game, set in a futuristic science-fiction world, inhabited by aliens and predators," the Board said.

"This context serves to lessen its impact."

"The more contentious violence is randomly generated and is not dependent on player selection of specific moves."

Earlier this month, the game's UK developer had refused to modify the game after the initial Australian ban.

"We will not be releasing a sanitised or cut down version for territories where adults are not considered by their governments to be able to make their own entertainment choices," Rebellion Developments told gaming blog CVG.

"Our game is not suitable for game players who are not adults."

Australia is one of the only developed nations in the world without an R18+ rating for games.

This month, the Government called for public input on the matter after seeing research that shows the average Australian gamer is aged 30.

Cryptologic's popular The Hulk, Spider-Man and Fantastic Four have leapt into action at Richard Branson's Virgin Games operation.

Call of Duty sells record $591m in five days

The video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is blasting its way into entertainment history.

After hauling in the biggest-ever first-day sales total last week, the game continues to break records.

Activision Blizzard, which released the game November 10, said the latest game in its Call of Duty franchise made $US550 million ($591.21 million) in worldwide sales during its first five days.

That would put it over the $US500 million ($537.46 million) record set last year by Grand Theft Auto IV, from Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.

Activision didn't say how many units it has shipped. But Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian estimates the company sold between 8.5 million and 9 million copies.

The game is also blowing past records set by other media. After Grand Theft Auto IV comes $US394 million ($423.52 million) in worldwide box office sales brought in by the movie Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince over its first five days, according to Activision.

In its first 24 hours on sale, Call of Duty made $US310 million ($333.23 million) in North America and the United Kingdom alone, while Grand Theft Auto made that same amount worldwide.

It was also far above the record $US155 million ($166.61 million) opening weekend for the Batman movie The Dark Knight last year.

The game, which sells for $US60 (prices vary in Australia), runs on Windows-based computers, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3.

Shares in Activision, which is based in Santa Monica, California, gained 3 US cents to $US11.72 in afternoon trading.

PartyGaming's PartyCasino and PartyPoker in line for more awards, by Greg Tingle - 18th December 2009

As the countdown towards Christmas continues, with just seven days to go, the igaming industry remains as competitive as ever. It shouldn't surprise anyone, punter, newbie or industry veteran, that PartyGaming and its PartyCasino and PartyPoker brands are in line for more industry awards and commendations.

PartyGaming remains the world’s leading listed online gaming company. Founded in 1997, the
Group has its shares listed on The London Stock Exchange.

Coming off a wave of momentum with its successful purchase of World Poker Tour (WPT Enterprises), Cashcade a number of months ago, and the release of a swag of new slot games, the company is tipped to continue domination of the gaming and igaming world.

Party's awards and commendations include eGaming Review Operator Of The Year and Socially Responsible Operator Of The Year.

This month PartyCasino.com has made the shortlist for Media Man - Casino News Media Online Casino Of The Month, and PartyPoker.com gets to the finals for the Media Man - Casino News Media Online Poker website Of The Month.

The company also achieved inclusion in the FTSE4Good Index Series and last month won 'Best Communications by a private sector company' for the second year running at the CorpComms Awards. PartyCasino and PartyPoker also carry the eCOGRA seal of approval.

As the company looks forward to the new year they look to continue innovation, value for money, world class service, and growth into new geographic regions including South America, Indian, France and the Asia Pacific.

PartyGaming will continue to revamp its websites including it's ever growing PartyCasino.com site, thanks to the frequent games being added and its newly acquired Club WTP website, now sporting a PartyGaming look and feel to it.

PartyGaming remains poised to make more inroads into the United States coming off the back of its purchase of WPT Enterprises (U.S residents can play online poker on the Club World Poker Tour website without potential legal complications). PartyPoker.com ambassador, Stewart Scott, has just been doing a fine job promoting the PartyGaming and PartyPoker.com brand on a national and international basis, and will be defending his poker championship at Aussie Millions 2010 this January at Mr Packer's Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia.

PartyGaming sites are available in a wide array of languages and currencies, and are available for play around the lock. Players can enjoy most games in either free mode or play for money mode. Last month the PartyCasino jackpot of close to $5 million dollars was one, and as we head towards Christmas the jackpot nears $1 million. PartyCasino also offers the Marvel Hero Jackpot, thanks to their business agreement with Marvel Entertainment. Insiders tip that Thor and The Hulk are the most popular Marvel slots at present, and this may be related to a Thor movie in the works and wrestling living legend, Hulk Hogan, being very prominent in the press of late, just returning to the United States after his successful Hulkamania tour of Australia. A bit of history...Hogan bought the rights to use "Hulk" from Marvel in the 1980's for a million dollars or thereabouts. Rumors persist of a potential Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair and Andre The Giant online slot machine in the new year, but that's another story for another time.

PartyGaming also offers a number of other world class promotions such as Cash Machine, Monthly Million, Slotastic Sundays, and reward offerings, PartyPoints and the very popular Palladium Lounge which has proved to be a must visit destination for PartyGaming VIP's.

It's been a hugely successful year for PartyGaming and the industry and players alike expect more groundbreaking developments from the company as 2010 approaches.

*the writer has a b2b relationship with a number of PartyGaming brands, as they do with dozens of other brands in the gaming and igaming world.

PartyCasino, Virgin Casino and Captain Cooks Casino compete for Online Casino of the Month title

PartyCasino, Virgin Casino and Captain Cooks Casino compete for Online Casino of the Month title

Three of the world's most popular online casinos have made the Casino News Media shortlist for the prestigious Online Casino of the Month title.

The Casino News Media monthly award is based upon a number of factors which include game play, game range, customer service, ethics, affiliate offerings and all round customer experience.

Casino News Media does have a business relationship with all three casino brands, as they do with dozens of brands in the casino and online casino sector.

Europe's InterCasino.com and PKR closely follow the leaders this month, however InterCasino and PKR are tipped to both be in a position to take out the winners trophy in the coming months, as both online casinos have made substantial improvements in the past few weeks and positive feedback has come in on both companies. PKR's revamp and InterCasino's new DC Comics Super Hero themed slots have really got both casinos back in contention for numerous industry awards.

This month PartyCasino added more games and features and was praised by numerous players and industry figures, and Virgin Casino has added approximately a dozen games including Marvel classics, The Hulk, Spider-Man and Fantastic Four.

Casino News Media is part of the Media Man group which includes Global Gaming Directory.

The Casino News Media award winner for December 2009 will be announced in earlier January 2010.

PartyGaming in talks with Bwin - 13th December 2009

PartyGaming is in talks with Bwin, the Austrian-based rival online gambling company, about a potential merger, a move that analysts have long been predicting as a possibility in an industry looking to consolidate.

The close-knit industry has seen a number of companies explore merger options with each other this year, as they wait for new markets to open.

Insiders at PartyGaming said current talks with Bwin went beyond the usual exploratory nature, but emphasised there was no imminent prospect of a deal. Both companies are licensed in Gibraltar.

However, the insiders said PartyGaming was keen that any deal with Bwin would be based on a merger of equals. The market capitalisation of both companies are similar – PartyGaming is worth £1.1bn, while Bwin is valued at around €1.3bn (£1.17bn). Neither PartyGaming nor Bwin would comment on the matter.

The desire for deal-making is likely to strengthen as countries that had turned their faces against regulated online gambling markets (France, Australia, India and United States) begin to step up preparations for liberalisation, albeit limited in some cases.

France is preparing for a partially-liberated market in 2010, Italy is widening its market to include bingo, casino and other games and other European states, with an eye on the potential tax revenues from the industry, are inching towards regulation.

PartyGaming has been preparing the ground for a significant deal, having sealed a non-prosecution agreement with the US department of justice in April over its trading in the US, in return for a forfeiture of $105m.

Jim Ryan, PartyGaming’s chief executive, has repeatedly said that the settlement was a necessary step prior to any merger activity on its part.

Bwin, listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange, is also keen on pushing ahead with merger activity at a time when the company is establishing itself as one of Europe's strongest online gambling companies.

Norbert Teufelberger, co-chief executive of Bwin, last month told the Financial Times that demand from big investment houses was significant and that Bwin would emerge from consolidation as “one of the bigger guys in this industry”.

Bwin, which has 20m registered users, has seen shares rise up 177 per cent in the last 12 months. It is expected to achieve gross gaming revenues of €450m, and adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of €110m.

Bwin strengthened its position in online poker this past September by purchasing Italian operator Gioco Digitale. It has established a strong sports betting product, and is the shirt sponsor of Real Madrid and AC Milan.

Other companies with an eye on events at PartyGaming and Bwin include 888 Holdings, Sportingbet and Unibet.

More details on the PartyGaming - Bwin talks as details come to hand. (Credit: Wires, Google News, Financial Times, Bloomberg, AP).

Poker News Media: Gaming site PKR picks Unica to improve e-mail program - 8th December 2009

PKR.com, a poker Web site, is working with interactive marketing company Unica on its international e-mail program.

The site is implementing Unica's software into its technology system, a process expected to be complete by early next year. PKR.com uses e-mail for retention purposes, specifically to encourage customers to return to the site and play more.

“Our members value our unique online community, and we want to make sure that we tap into their passion to ensure that they keep coming back,” said Simon Prodger, marketing director at PKR.COM, in a statement.

On average, PKR.com sends 10 million to 12 million e-mails to its 3 million customers every month. These messages go out in five different languages to 200 different countries, and the company sends a weekly e-mail to all of its customers.

The first phase of the Unica integration will automate this process into sending triggered messages based on a customer's behavior, geographic location and the message.

“The objective is to send the e-mail at the time that the customer is likely to engage,” said Graeme McLaren, director of strategic marketing for EMEA at Unica. “They are seeking to drive relevance, higher response rates and efficiency by automating something that is currently manual.”

The company will also tailor e-mail content by language and culture, depending on the customer. “Gamblers in Hong Kong are not interested in the same thing that gamblers in the UK are interested in,” said McLaren.

The automation also includes sending dynamic messages that can change depending on the time a customer opens them. For example, if an e-mail is promoting an offer that has expired by the time the recipient opens it, a new message will be inserted into the e-mail.

PKR.com joins other Unica gaming clients. Unica's roster already includes 888.com, Boyd Gaming, Casinos Austria, Foxwoods and Full Tilt Poker.

New Ivey makes PKR history - 13th November 2009

PKR.com player ‘PatIvey’ has gone down in PKR history after producing a performance which saw him claim back-to-back Masters titles.

A first in the tournament’s history, the 25 year old Swede claimed the coveted PKR Masters crown twice in consecutive months– scooping a huge $60,000 in the process. He then returned for a third month and despite making the final table with the chip lead, just missed out on the hat-trick - bringing home $11,250 for third place, and bowing out to Russian ‘ShatokhinNikita’.

On top of that impressive feat, ‘PatIvey’ continued his good run, with a Saturday Big Shot victory for $7,800 as well as a win in a $10,000 Guaranteed Prime Time tournament.

The up-and-coming online phenomenon from Norkopping commented on success and his recent hot-streak, saying "Of course you have to be lucky. But when I play I try not to risk all my chips on weak hands and I try to put the guys on what they have, and after that I make my play. If you have many chips it's not wrong to be a fish and try to steal. But when you play tournaments you must have a combination of good play and luck. Sometimes you have that luck and sometimes you don't, but you can always improve your own odds of winning - that's the big clue I think."

Modern Warfare 2 smashes first-week records

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has racked up more record sales of $US550 million ($593 million) in its first five days, but the publisher Activision Blizzard is still concerned about weak consumer spending.

The game, a first-person-shooter that lets gamers play as elite soldiers hunting down targets from South America to Afghanistan, beat the record set by last year's blockbuster Grand Theft Auto IV in its first week.

Activision did not say how many Modern Warfare 2 units were sold in the period.

Last week it said it sold 4.7 million copies for a total of $US310 million ($333.3 million) on its first day in the US and UK alone.

Activision said five-day sales for Modern Warfare 2 topped the $US394 million ($423.6 million) earned at the box office by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in its first five days.

The video game bested Batman film The Dark Knight, which had held the record for the top opening weekend ever by taking in $US158.4 million ($170.3 million) in July 2008.

Modern Warfare 2 is the sixth title in a franchise that has won a devoted following since the first version was released in 2003.

Analysts' sales estimates for the game, which retails for around $100 in Australia, range from 11 million to 13 million units by the end of 2009.

There is plenty at stake for Activision since Call of Duty is likely to account for a sizeable chunk of the company's profits in the fourth quarter, analysts say.

Shares of the company, which have risen around 35 per cent and outperformed chief rival Electronic Arts Inc's 11 per cent gain, rose 5c in early trade to $US11.74 ($12.62).

Price cuts from home console makers Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony had been expected to help boost software sales since September, but have so far proven to have little effect on game sales.

Sales of video game equipment and software in the US tumbled 19 per cent in October to $US1.07 billion ($1.15 billion), according to research group NPD.

PartyPoker Wins Poker Operator Of The Year, by Greg Tingle - 1st December 2009

PartyGaming flagship poker brand, PartyPoker.com has won Poker operator of the year at the EGR awards, the premier industry awards for the online gaming sector.

PartyGaming poker director Moshe Davidovich said "We work very hard to try and stay ahead of the game, and it's great to be noticed for that."

PartyPoker.com is the biggest non-US stand alone poker site in online gaming.

Media Man understands that PartyGaming's successful purchase of Club World Poker Tour was instrumental in PartyPoker's EGR win. Media Man does some business with a number of PartyGaming brands, as they do with dozens of other companies in the gaming b2b sector.

PartyPoker.com is the PartyGaming flagship brand, followed by its online casino flagship PartyCasino.com.

Record breaking Call of Duty tops $3 billion - 30th November 2009

Activision Blizzard said on Friday its Call of Duty video game franchise pushed past the $US3 billion mark in global retail sales.

Overall, the Call of Duty series has sold more than 55 million units since its launch in 2003, Activision said, citing data compiled by NPD Group, Charttrack, GfK and internal company estimates.

The company released the sixth title in the series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, earlier this month to record-breaking results.

Released on November 10, the controversial first-person shooter game recorded an estimated $US550 million in sales in its first five days on the market. It sold 4.7 million copies on the first day in the United States and United Kingdom alone. The original Modern Warfare has sold 12 million copies globally.

"If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history," Activision Chief Executive Bobby Kotick said in a company release.

You can opt in to the Cash Machine at any time. We'll use all the points you've earned since 9th November to calculate your prize at the end of the promotion.

You have 28 qualifying days, and your cash machine prize is only limited by the number of points you earn: if your lowest day's points total is 1,000 points, we'll give you $1,000. What you win is up to you.

Virgin Casino New Release: Dungeons & Dragons: Crystal Caverns

Adventure & fortune awaits in Dungeons & Dragons: Crystal Caverns. Now with Tumbling Reels® plus free spins & a scatter feature.

Introduction

Lead your band of heroes on a bold adventure to the mythical Crystal Caverns. Legends describe huge, dazzling caverns containing glittering gems and jewels beyond compare. Defeat hordes of trolls, ogres and skeletons and reap the rewards of incredible treasure.

Play 20 lines of action and enjoy the unique wonder of the Tumbling Reels® feature. Reel symbols fall from the top of the screen instead of spinning. Winning symbol combinations disappear and new symbols tumble down to replace the vanished symbols. You can win again and again and again on the same play of the reels!

Gain entrance into the amazing Crystal Caverns by getting three Bonus symbols on a payline. Inside the caverns enjoy the Tumbling Treasures Bonus starting with 6 free spins. You can retrigger the Bonus multiple times, up to 300 total free spins! As you battle wave after wave of monsters, reap the rewards of the Monster Scatter feature. With this feature, experience more tumbles and bigger awards as all three of the super valuable monster symbols pay as scatter pays. With richer reels and more ways to win, you will want to go on this quest again and again.

Your adventure and fortune awaits in Dungeons & Dragons: Crystal Caverns.

How To Bet
Dungeons & Dragons: Crystal Caverns features 20 paylines. Bet 1-5 credits on each payline.

Click the 1 PER LINE button to bet 1 credit on all 20 paylines.
Click the 2 PER LINE button to bet 2 credits on all 20 paylines.
Click the 3 PER LINE button to bet 3 credits on all 20 paylines.
Click the 4 PER LINE button to bet 4 credits on all 20 paylines. Click the BET MAX button to bet the maximum, which is 5 credits on each payline.

If you have fewer than 100 credits, you can use the PER LINE bet buttons to bet in increments of 20 on all 20 paylines (20, 40, 60 and 80 credits) depending upon how many credits remain.

Click the PLAY button to spin the reels.

Tumbling Reels® Feature
All paytable-defined symbol combinations trigger the Tumbling Reels® feature during regular and Tumbling Treasures Bonus game play. All winning symbol combinations are evaluated and values are added to the credit meter.

All symbols in winning combinations disappear. All symbol positions on each reel are filled as symbols tumble from above, in sequence, to fill all empty spaces. The game screen is re-evaluated for symbols in winning combinations and values are added to the credit meter.

The Tumbling Reels® feature remains active until no winning symbol combinations are created as a result of the reels tumbling.

Tumbling Treasures Bonus
You can trigger the Tumbling Treasures Bonus by getting three Bonus symbols on a payline. Upon triggering the Bonus, you receive 6 free spins.

During the Tumbling Treasures Bonus, you can retrigger the Bonus multiple times. Your Tumbling Treasures Bonus continues until you have 0 spins remaining, or until you have played 300 free spins. To retrigger the Bonus, you need to get 3, 4 or 5 Bonus symbols anywhere on the Bonus reels. If you get 3 Bonus symbols, you have an equal chance to win an additional 2, 3 or 4 free spins. If you get 4 Bonus symbols, you have an equal chance to win an additional 4, 6, 8 or 10 free spins. If you get 5 Bonus symbols, you have an equal chance to win an additional 6, 8, 10, 12 or 15 free spins.

During the Tumbling Treasures Bonus, your bet per line in the bonus is equal to the bet per line on the reel spin that triggered the Bonus. In the Tumbling Treasures Bonus, the reels are much richer and there are more ways to win. With the Monster Scatter feature, you only need to get 3 or more of the same monster symbol anywhere on the reels to win! See the paytable for details.

Options
Clicking the OPTIONS button reveals a panel that allows you to customise your game experience.

You can customise the GRAPHICS QUALITY of the game. You may want to adjust the quality of the graphics to get the optimal animation performance on your computer. In BEST mode, the graphics look the best but performance may suffer. The HIGH (default) and MEDIUM settings lower the quality but increase the performance. In LOW mode, the graphics are degraded but the smoothest animation performance is achieved, even on slower computers.

You can customise the AUDIO settings of the game. The audio can be turned ON or OFF, depending on your preference.

Rules

All line pay symbols must appear on a played line and on consecutive reels, beginning with the far left reel.

All payline wins occur on bet lines only.

Only highest winner paid on each payline.

Only one award paid per payline.

Line wins are multiplied by the total number of credits bet on the winning line.

Social gaming gets seat at big table

Electronic Arts has purchased Facebook games developer Playfish for USD$400 million.

The company, the second most popular Facebook games developer after Zynga, was expected to reach USD$75 million in revenues this year. These revenues are generated by traditional advertisers as well as sponsors who agree to buy in-game upgrades for users who try their products. They also monetise via players who make micro-payments to progress more quickly.

Industry leader Zynga reportedly turned over USD$250 million in 2009.

Although hard data is unavailable, industry commentator consensus is, currently, the major revenue source is in-game purchases rather than advertising. For example, Valentine's Day saw Playfish sell four million virtual flowers from USD5c to USD$2.

For aficionados, Playfish games include Country Story, Pet Society and Restaurant City.

Thor online slot review

Thor is set to hit the movies in 2010.

Here is the Thor online slot game review. The Thor online slot game can be found at PartyCasino.com

Websites

PartyCasino.com

PartyCasino.com Marvel Slots website

Review

Thor is one of CryptoLogic's great "Marvel Heroes" video slots. Based on the comic book, this game has unbeatable visuals and sound effects, and a free spin bonus feature where all winnings are tripled! The game's other payouts are big too, making this an all around great video slot.

If you are familiar with the comic you will recognize a lot of the game's symbols, but they are great to look at even if you don't know what they are. The game has a kind of Viking god theme, which makes it look quite interesting. But it is the gameplay and bonuses that are really important, right? Well Thor has those too!

With nine paylines to enable, that means this is a max 9 coin game. But with a coin size anywhere from 0.05 to 5.00, that makes for a very flexible pay-in! Of course it's always best to bet as high as you can, because the higher you bet, the better your chances will be to land of the game's three Progressive Jackpots! Max bet for this game is at least 0.45, and can be as high as 45.00.

A Bonus Feature is hidden away in this slot, and is unlocked by hitting three or more Thor Logo scatter symbols anywhere on the screen. The Bonus Feature awards you with ten free spins, and during those spins, any winnings are tripled! That makes for one of the best free spin bonuses out there.

The last awesome feature in this game is the Thor wild symbol. It substitutes for any standard symbol on any reel, and can be a big help in completing winning combos. Plus, if you use just one, it doubles your payout, and if you use five, you get paid at an incredible 4000:1!

Thor is a Norse god, and is the biggest and baddest of them all. It is only appropriate, then, that his video slot is the biggest and baddest too!

Game objective:

Thor Slot is a five-reel, nine-paylines ‘Marvel Jackpot’ slot game with a free game feature. The game also features a "Thor" wild symbol which substitutes for all symbols except the “Scattered Logo” symbol. Three or more “Scattered Logo” symbols anywhere in view triggers the free game feature in which all wins are tripled.

Marvel Jackpot

Marvel Jackpot consists of three jackpots at different levels, the levels are - from the lowest - Hero Jackpot, Super Hero Jackpot, and Marvel Hero Jackpot, with the latter being the highest. All three jackpots grow progressively as bets are made. For each spin, on any of the Marvel Jackpot games, the house adds a small credit to the three running jackpots. All three levels in Marvel Jackpot can be won irrespective of hitting any paying combination, while betting any amount.

Game Information:

The minimum bet amount is $0.01 USD and the maximum bet amount is $360 USD.
You can bet on up to nine lines.

How to play:
Setting 'LINES': Nine lines are selected by default. Lines can be changed by clicking ? and ? arrow button available to the right side of the 'LINES' indicator on the game screen respectively. Selected lines are lit, and unselected lines are not lit.

Pay lines can also be selected by using the number button on either side of the reels.
Setting 'BETS': When you enter the game, a default bet of $0.10 per line is set for all 9 lines, resulting in a total bet of $0.90. You can choose to increase or decrease the bet per line by using the ? and ? arrows available beside the 'BET' indicator. If your game balance is less than $0.90, the system will automatically adjust the bet to the next highest possible amount.

Max Bet: To play with 9 lines and $40.00 bet per line, click on 'BET MAX'. If your game balance is not sufficient, this option is disabled.
The number of selected lines is multiplied by the 'bet per line', and the total bet amount is displayed in the 'TOTAL BET', which is located at the bottom right of the game screen.

'PAYTABLE': The 'PAYTABLE' can be viewed by clicking on the 'PAYTABLE' button located on the bottom left of the main console screen. To calculate the payout amount, multiply the respective prize with the bet per line. Note that to calculate the payout for “Scattered Logo” symbol, multiply the respective prize with the total bet. You can go back to the game by clicking on the 'GAME' button.

SPIN: Click on SPIN to start spinning the reels. After the reels stop spinning, any winning combinations on the selected lines, or any scatter wins, will be paid according to the paytable. The keyboard shortcut for the Spin button is the spacebar.

Result: Any wins are indicated by their paylines highlighted and symbols animating or, in the case of a scatter win, by their symbols animating. Free game feature total win amounts and jackpot win amounts are shown at the top of the reels as a message. The individual line wins are shown at the end of each winning line.

PAID: Any Line win/ Scatter win which are paid in Normal spin or Free Spin is shown in ‘PAID’ field.

Feature game: A free game feature is triggered when three or more “Scattered Logo” symbols appear anywhere in view. 10 free spins are awarded at a 3 * multiplier payout for all wins during the free game feature game. On completion of the feature game, the main game is restored.

Continue Button: A Continue button will be presented during the Free Games feature. This button allows the player to bypass the display of winning paylines and associated symbol animations and continues to next free game. The keyboard shortcut for the Continue button is the spacebar.
Repeat Bet/Change Bet: If you have already bet, the settings selected will be automatically carried over to the subsequent spin. Simply click on 'SPIN' to play with the same bet again. To change your bet, use the Up-arrow and Down-arrow buttons near the 'BET' or 'LINES' indicators as explained above.
Credits: Your remaining game balance, after you have placed the desired bet, is shown under 'CREDIT'.
Your current game balance is the sum of the amounts displayed under the 'CREDIT' meter and the 'TOTAL BET' meter.

Jackpot Award: When one of the Marvel Jackpots is awarded, an appropriate banner message will be displayed on top of the five reels in view indicating the level of jackpot awarded and the amount. This information will be maintained in the banner window until the player’s next initiated action occurs. At such time, the regular presentation and rotation of the main banner messages will continue. The jackpot win amount will be credited to your Party Account immediately. The jackpot win will not be added to the game balance.
If you hit multiple jackpots at the same time, the Jackpot messages for each of the jackpots will be played one after the other.

The current amount of all the three jackpot levels is shown at the top left hand corner of the reels in the game screen. Each jackpot is reset to its individual base value after any player hits that particular jackpot. The reset value of all the three jackpots is given below:

Hero Jackpot: $50.00
Super Hero Jackpot: $500.00
Marvel Hero Jackpot: $5,000.00

You can also view the current values, last win details and Marvel Jackpot details by clicking on the ‘Total Casino Jackpot’ link in the left panel under the jackpot slider in the main Game Lobby of download client.
'AUTOPLAY': You can make use of this feature to choose 'hands free' game play for selected number of spins. To increase or decrease the auto spin count choose Left (-) and Right (+) arrows displayed in the bottom left of the game screen. Maximum number of Auto Play games can be selected is 99. Click on 'SPIN' to activate the selected option and start the spins.
Click on 'STOP' to deactivate the AUTOPLAY options. While 'AUTO PLAY’ is in progress you can interrupt the game by clicking on the 'STOP' button. If spin is in progress, 'AUTO PLAY' will be stopped after completing the current spin other wise 'AUTO PLAY' is stopped immediately and normal game is restored.
Click on 'GAME LOGS' to view the logs of the games you've played.
Click on 'GAME RULES' to view the current version number & game rules of the game.

A One Man Slot War! PartyCasino Adds Rambo And Live Dealer

PartyCasino Adds ‘Rambo’ To Movie Roster and Launches Live Dealer

PartyCasino.com is pleased to announce the arrival of a new ‘Rambo’ themed slot game at the world’s largest online casino. ‘Rambo’ is the latest movie themed slot to launch on PartyCasino.com and joins a collection of games that reads like a list of Hollywood’s greatest movies. PartyCasino.com pays out over $10 million EVERY DAY to players and continues to expand rapidly.

‘Rambo’ is a 20 line, 5 reel online slot machine based on the iconic film series that provides a high octane gaming experience. The game features heavy artillery, helicopters and jungle rescue sequences you would expect from the world famous motion picture. The minimum stake is one cent and a player can bet on a maximum of 20 lines.

The feature of the game is triggered when a player hits three pictures of John Rambo. There your mission as Rambo is to shoot down base defences from your helicopter and rescue the POW’s. The enemy draws first blood not you but it is time to unleash the one man war to win big cash prizes. Within this feature the gameplay is boosted by chances to win extra multipliers and extra free spins.

Other film themed slots at PartyCasino.com include Mission:Impossible, The Terminator, The Godfather, Top Gun, Saturday Night Fever and Gone With The Wind. The Gold Mega Jackpot at PartyCasino.com currently stands at nearly $1.3 million! On February 24th 2009, ‘ScottishAOD’ won the $1,358,857.49 Gold Mega Jackpot on the Mega Fortune Wheel. This jackpot was particularly closely followed as it looked at one point that the PartyCasino.com record of $1,571,974 paid out to one player on the 8th October 2006 was under threat. His father, ‘Takemystack7’, also won a Gold Mega Jackpot but for $763,356.33 on the 24th May 2008! Between them they have won $2,122,213.82 off PartyCasino.com in exactly nine months to the day!

PartyCasino.com is also pleased to announce that the Live Dealer function on the site is up and running. Multi-currency baccarat, blackjack and roulette games are available following an agreement made with EvolutionGaming last year.

A PartyCasino.com spokesman said: “With Rambo it’s a case of give it a go, give it a go now and we’ll give you an experience you won’t believe! PartyCasino.com has already developed a portfolio of slots that reads like a collection of Hollywood greats and there is more to come. We’re also very happy to introduce live dealer – this provides a new online experience for those that prefer the experience of watching croupiers dealing cards or spinning roulette wheels.”

Play on the Biggest Monopoly Board Ever

Monopoly City Streets will incorporate Google Maps in an online version of the famed board game.

US, September 8, 2009 - EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. - Have you ever wanted to own the entire street where you live? Starting tomorrow (September 9), aspiring MONOPOLY moguls can take over the globe with MONOPOLY CITY STREETS, a limited-time online free version of the world's most popular board game that allows players to "buy" streets based on Google Maps, competing against participants all over the world.

The MONOPOLY CITY STREETS instant-play online platform brings MONOPOLY to life by letting competitors play with the actual streets that are special to them. including their very own neighborhood, town or city. Or, players can choose to set up their property empire in a city where they would like to own property. It's easy to get started -- players create a profile on www.monopolycitystreets.com and begin to acquire properties each day through purchases and trades. Each player starts the game with $3 million MONOPOLY dollars and earns rent based on streets and properties owned at the time competitors log into the game.

Each street in the world is available for purchase by only one player, increasing the opportunity for trading and interaction among players. Players can instantly set up houses, hotels, skyscrapers and other buildings quickly after acquiring streets to increase property values.

The online game is launching in celebration of the release of MONOPOLY CITY, a new board game where players build a 3-D city in the center of the game board. For the first time since MONOPOLY was invented in 1935, game play has changed, removing the need to collect an entire property group before players can build structures on their properties, so a city can be built from the ground up from the first roll of the dice. Additionally, just like in real life, the value of property and players' incomes can rise and fall. Players can build structures to increase property values, such as schools or eco-friendly wind farms, or they can sabotage opponents by building sewage plants or prisons on the competition's property.

"The online experience for MONOPOLY CITY STREETS emphasizes the exciting dealing and negotiating elements of MONOPOLY," said Sarah Hoskin, Senior Marketing Manager for U.S. Marketing at Hasbro Games. "Both MONOPOLY CITY STREETS and MONOPOLY CITY bring new creativity to MONOPOLY that goes beyond the traditional property streets, green houses and red hotels."

MONOPOLY CITY STREETS will launch online in English, French, Spanish, Dutch and German on September 9, 2009. MONOPOLY CITY will be available at mass retail stores nationwide in Fall for the approximate retail price of $34.99. The board game includes more than 80 3-D buildings, district property cards, MONOPOLY money, "Chance" and "Dodge Rent" cards, and a Trading unit that requires two AAA batteries.

ABOUT MONOPOLY

Since 1935, more than 250 million copies of MONOPOLY have been sold in 106 countries and 40 languages. More than 200 different editions of the game have been published, but the most popular continues to be the classic "Number Nine." Affectionately known by its original product number, "Number Nine" is based on the streets of Atlantic City and is nearly identical to Charles Darrow's original submission to Parker Brothers. The MONOPOLY name and logo, the distinctive design of the game board, the four corner squares, the MR. MONOPOLY name and the character, as well as each of the distinctive elements of the board and playing pieces are trademarks of Hasbro for its property trading game and game equipment. New games for PartyCasino.com

Gibraltar-based PartyCasino.com advises it has a new collection of high profile branded slot themes in its latest release.

Headlining is the Capcom licensed Resident Evil and the Paramount-licensed The Naked Gun. This release also sees the introduction of the Paramount-licensed wild west film themed High Noon and popular puzzle game Bejeweled.

Resident Evil is a 20-line, five-reel slot based on the world famous survival horror video game series. The new slot has a free spin feature that awards additional spins, and two bonus game features that provide the chance to win extra prizes.

The game also features an expanding wild “Resident Evil” logo symbol. The “Resident Evil” logo symbol substitutes for all symbols—except the scattered ‘umbrella corporation’, ‘herb’ and money chest symbols. Three or more scattered umbrella corp. symbols anywhere in view triggers the Resident Evil feature.

The Naked Gun is also a 20-line, five-reel online slot machine but is based on the famous Leslie Nielsen movie series. The game is accompanied by the distinctive music and has four features that use great video footage of classic scenes from the films. The game also features a wild symbol which appears on reels one, two, three and four only. The wild ‘Naked Gun’ logo symbol substitutes for all symbols other than the scattered police siren symbol. Three or more scattered police siren symbols occurring anywhere in view triggers The Naked Gun feature games.

A company spokesman said: "The release of Resident Evil and The Naked Gun marks another big step forward for interactivity and game play for slots on PartyCasino.com"

Sega Sonic Slot Via Playtech On Cards This October

As reported in the CAP Forum yesterday, Sega is said to be launching a slot game this October, sitting on Playtech software.

Media Man Australia comment...

Google, Hasbro's "Monopoly", Sony and FremantleMedia have followed the money trail to gambling, and now so have Sega. All very exciting. As Stan Lee from Marvel fame says, POW! Excelsior! I would like to do a deal with Sega also.

Poker in the Sky Takes Game to New Extremes, by Jessica Welman - Poker News Daily - 3rd September 2009

PartyPoker and Ace Magazine’s latest live poker event is taking the game to new heights—literally. In a move that will surely differentiate the upcoming Poker in the Sky event from others around Europe, the 22-person tournament will take place 150 feet in the air over Town Hall in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The players are not just battling on the rooftop of a high rise, either. Instead, they will be seated at poker tables on a platform that will be hoisted 150 feet in the air by crane and stay for there for four hours until the event is complete. The tournament is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 11th.

PartyPoker customers who reside in Denmark were able to satellite their way into this unique event online and the winner of Poker in the Sky will receive a buy-in to October’s PartyPoker World Open V as well as hotel and airfare for the televised event. The World Open V is scheduled to take place at London’s Palm Beach Casino from October 11th to 15th. The Poker in the Sky qualifier will join a lineup of players that includes PartyPoker spokesperson Mike Sexton, Neil Channing, Tom “durrrr” Dwan, Luke “FullFlush” Schwartz, and J.C. Tran.

In a statement released by PartyPoker, a spokesperson for the site explained the motivation behind creating such a unique venue for Poker in the Sky: “Poker is a high octane game and we want to give the Danish poker players a special experience that will really boost their adrenaline levels. We have an expectation that it will be the most spectacular poker event Copenhagen has ever seen.”

While the event will likely be both entertaining and exciting, it is not suited for everyone. A PartyPoker spokesperson told Poker News Daily that one qualifier already changed his mind about participating once he realized just how high up 150 feet really was. Despite the one player’s reservations, the tournament is scheduled to proceed as planned and PartyPoker has several surprises in the works, including two celebrity players participating in the event.

This is actually not the first time poker has taken to the skies. In July of 2006, the online poker site InterPoker hosted a poker tournament aboard a plane as part of its Extreme Poker Tour. Five players, including Phil “The Unabomber” Laak, participated in a sit and go tournament in which participants were forced to sky dive off once they were eliminated. The Extreme Poker events also included two tournaments that took place underwater and one that was held on an Arctic ice shelf in Finland.

Poker in the Sky may not require its players to bungee jump from the sky-high platform back to the ground, but there should still be plenty of excitement and nerve-wracking action. “We think it will be a great spectacle and it also offers our players a unique experience if they have a head for heights,” a PartyPoker representative told Poker News Daily. There is no word yet on whether the event will be televised and more details about Poker in the Sky will be revealed in the days leading up to it. (Credit: Poker News Daily)

Online firm buoyed by casino growth - 1st September 2009

Online gaming firm PartyGaming has said its casino operations had gone from "strength to strength" after a 17% surge in average daily revenues.

The owner of brands including PartyCasino and FoxyBingo said significant expansion in casino following the launch of 60 new games and a marketing drive helped deliver an "outstanding" first half performance for the division.

Underlying earnings in casino rose 34.8% to 36 million US dollars (£22.2 million) in the half year to June 30, with average daily revenues increasing 17% between the second and first quarters of the year.

The gains offset pressure on its PartyPoker division after strong competition left poker earnings 29% lower at 25.7 million US dollars (£15.8 million).

Overall group earnings from continuing operations fell to 60.7 million US dollars (£37.4 million) from 64.9 million US dollars a year earlier.

Chief executive Jim Ryan said: "Casino has been our star performer and continues to go from strength-to-strength, consolidating our position as the world's leading online casino."

Year-on-year currency movements meant total revenues fell to 201.3 million US dollars (£124.1 million), but the reverse impact on its cost base limited the fall in underlying earnings, the company said.

PartyGaming reported a bottom-line loss of 66.9 million US dollars (£41.2 million) due to payments associated with a non-prosecution agreement with US authorities.

The company offered internet gaming to players in the US, including poker, from 1997 until such services were banned in 2006. It voluntarily exited the market when the legislation came into force, but prior to October 2006 some US transactions were contrary to certain US laws.

It has agreed to pay 105 million US dollars (£70.7 million), payable in stages up until September 2012, in order to resolve the legacy issues.

Are the latest movie-based games good for gamers? - News Limited - 12th August 2009

There are scores of innovative, ground-breaking and visually spectacular video games hitting the market every year.

Then there are the ones based on movies.

While many games inspired by the latest Hollywood blockbuster are fine products in their own right, just as many are dismissed as designed by numbers fodder that are quickly forgotten.

The merits of video game movie tie-ins can be debated, but one fact is beyond doubt _ they are a rapidly growing and important segment of the games market.

In the past couple of months alone, games released to coincide with movies hitting the big screen include Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Watchman: The End is Nigh, Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and Hannah Montana: The Movie.

Not to mention Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, the latest Indy game in a long running franchise inspired by a film first released more than 25 years ago.

The recently released Ghostbusters even managed to reunite original cast members from the 1983 movie _ Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd _ for the first time in two decades in order to voice the new games characters.

There are so many movie-based game tie-ins in fact, customers entering a video game retailer such as EB Games could be forgiven they for thinking they were walking into a DVD rental outfit instead.

Just because a video game is based on a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster film however, doesn't ensure it will be successful.

President of the Game Developers Association of Australia, Tom Crago, says there is no better example of the disconnect that can occur between movies and games than ET.

While the Steven Spielberg sci-fi flick about a group of kids trying to help an adorably cute alien to return home was a huge hit, the attempt to cash in with a video game spin off sank without trace.

``That's a great example of a classic film, but a terrible game,'' says Crago. ``About 100,000 copies (of the game) ended up as land-fill.''

Given the patchy history of the quality of movie based games, it is perhaps not surprising they have come in for much derision from critics over the years. It's a generalisation however which can be a bit unfair, according to Crago.

``There have been bad licensed games, which gives substance to the view that film doesn't lend itself to video game, which makes it hard for game developers.''

Crago says it is a shame the target audience of a movie based game, such as children, is forgotten when the end product is written off by more `hard core' oriented gamers.

``(Reviewers) do have a propensity on occasion to criticise them (movie tie-ins) unfairly because they are simply based on a movie,'' says Crago, whose company Tantalus has designed games based on movies such as Pixar's Cars and The Polar Express.

The Melbourne based crew behind the recently released Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen game agree.

Krome Studios producer Mark Coombes and game designer Simon Short lead a team which created the Wii and PS2 versions of the multi platform game. They told extratech in a recent interview the specialist games press often look down their nose at games based on movie franchises.

``It's certainly a critics thing,'' says Coombes.

He says it is the public who shell out their hard earned cash however and who, at the end of the day, will decide if the game is any good.

``You could argue a lot of it (cynicism) is justified, but I don't think consumers worry too much about that. They judge a game on it's merits.''

Games based on film franchises can be a two-edged sword for the video game industry.

On the plus side, they have become an enormously important revenue stream, providing a steady injection of funds into development studios and distributers around the world.

Those who create a game such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen are also safe in the knowledge that a huge amount of resources from franchise owning companies such as Hasbro and Activision, will be thrown into publicising, distributing and marketing the game.

On the down side are the often strict over sight controls from interested parties keenly protective of their brand, which if not handled sensitively, can stifle innovation and creativity, potentially delivering an uninspiring game.

Then there is the strict development time-table structured to ensure the game is delivered to coincide with the accompanying films release.

The GDAA's Crago laughs (somewhat nervously) as he refers to what is known in the games industry as the `unmoveable deadline.'

``If it's tied into a movie (release) it can be quite inflexible. The companies involved also want to protect their assets, so at times it can be quite stressful,

``But then, (once released) you enjoy the benefits of marketing when it is launched, which will hopefully increase sales.''

When it comes to movies and video games, mobile phones are new frontier.

Global video games powerhouse Electronic Arts has announced it is bringing Hollywood to mobile phones this year with the launch of four new, movie-based titles: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, G.I. JOE The Rise of Cobra, Star Trek and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

``There are a lot of great movies this winter that translate into exciting mobile entertainment experiences, including these phenomenally popular franchises,'' Adam Sussman, VP Worldwide Publishing, EA Mobile says.

``These are four of the hottest films this year and EA Mobile is proud to bring fantastic game companions for each title to mobile phones.''

Just because a film is a blockbuster doesn't mean the game based on it is going to kick goals though.

For every cinematic success the calibre of Terminator, Enter the Matrix and Ironman, there is an accompanying game which failed to strike a chord with critics.

There are occasional examples however such as The Chronicles of Riddick according to the GDAA's Tom Crago, in which the game has evolved far beyond the original 2004 release movie starring Vin Diesel.

``That game was a massive critical success, more so than the film.''

The symbiotic relationship between Hollywood and video game design has lead to some huge advances in cutting edge technology.

The lines between movies and video games have become increasingly blurred in recent years, as marked improvements in computer generated imagery (CGI) in particular have drastically improved the quality of on-screen visuals.

This is especially so in cut-scenes. The almost photo realistic mini movies in games such as Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Gran Turismo: Prologue and Dead Space are breathtaking.

The latest movie game tie-in to take advantage of this is technological roller coaster is G-Force.

Like the soon to be released big budget Disney film on which it is based, the game puts players in the shoes of a group of highly trained secret agent guinea pigs out to save the world from an evil billionaire and his army of robotic appliances.

A feature of the game are the cutting edge graphics which for the first time present near 3D visuals on screen during game-play.

Motion capture technology, used to reproduce more realistic human movement in both computer generated movie and video game characters, has also produced some startling success.

The same system in which the physical movements of an electrode covered actor were captured to bring the hideous creature Gollum to life in director Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings, was used to deliver more realistic human movement in the game of the same name.

The system has also been used in game titles ranging from 2003' tennis game Top Spin featuring a motion captured Lleyton Hewitt to more recent releases such as Resident Evil 5 and The Bourne Conspiracy.

Current generation consoles pack a tonne of processing power, leading to ever higher expectations from gamers demanding more realistic, cinematic gaming experiences and increasingly life-like characters on screen.

In response, researchers continue to push the technical envelope when it comes to closing the gap between movies and games.

Computer graphics card company ATI are working on a new system which they say will revolutionise how video game characters look and respond to player commands on screen.

Cinema 2.0 is a combined hardware/software solution which aims to bring a higher level of realism and interactivity to films and games, allowing movie-makers and game developers to render 3D images in real time.

Think video games that look as good as movies or films you can interact with, changing the ending.

The exciting concept opens the door to for example, a photo realistic, digitized version of Angelina Jolie starring in the next instalment of Tomb Raider based on the real thing.

Now that's something I'd like to see. (Credit: News Limited)

Others could follow us, says Virgin Games chief executive - This Is Guernsey - 9th June 2009

Guernsey has become the central hub for all Virgin Games online gaming services.

The company moved to Guernsey last year and took on four people, according to Virgin Games chief executive Simon Burridge (pictured).

‘We started as a marketing operation, which meant we had to outsource all operations except marketing,’ he said.

That has now changed and the company has centralised its casino, poker and bingo services in the island.

Making all the operations in-house had always been the intention when moving to Guernsey, according to Mr Burridge.

He said he was pleased with how the company was operating here.

‘It is a lovely place. It has fantastic infrastructure and we wanted to employ people with financial experience. It is also close to the UK and we are regulated nearby in Alderney.’

He said he could definitely see more online companies moving to the island. (Credit: This Is Guernsey)

Online poker: Five card clicks, by Rob Sharp - The Independent - 6th May 2009

Virtual casinos bring the game right to your laptop. As The Independent launches its own poker league, Rob Sharp discovers why online gambling is becoming an even bigger deal

In a dusty room that has never seen the light of day, a concerned-looking man sits nervously behind a computer screen. He takes a moment to assess another man, who sits at a terminal nearby. They are locked into an anxious battle of wills. The first man looks his opponent slowly up and down, before quietly clicking on the computer mouse beside him.The two men are showcasing Virgin Poker, Virgin’s online poker gaming website, at Aspers, a casino in central Newcastle.

There are few things that would tempt out journalists on such a drab day in the North East, but online poker is big business. One million people gamble using the controversial card game in the UK each year, part of a global industry worth over £1bn. By logging on to virgingames.com or PokerStars.com competitors can emulate their poker-playing heroes from the comfort of their bedrooms. An increase in the tax on poker profits from 15 to 50 per cent, announced in last month’s Budget, will clip the wings of traditional poker operators. But many online poker companies, including Virgin Poker, are based offshore and are thus exempt.

While encouraging people to gamble responsibly, today The Independent, in a joint venture with Virgin Poker, launches its own poker league via independent.co.uk. “Nowadays there are over half a million regular online poker players logging on and playing,” says Joe Legge, poker product manager at Virgin Games. “For some, it’s their profession but for most it’s a form of entertainment that is mentally stimulating and doesn’t have to involve risking a lot of money. The Independent’s poker league is a great extension of our commitment to the social side of poker playing. ”Steph Boyd, from Darvel near Glasgow, known simply by the gaming moniker of “mole man”, is one of the people who relies on poker playing online for his entire income, not just for entertainment.

Related articles

In 2006, his first year of professional play, he claims to have made £1.5m. “It’s a great lifestyle, it’s a great job,” he says, sat at a traditional poker table close to the online gamers in Newcastle. “To be honest, there are not a lot of other jobs I could do. Before I turned professional I worked as a fitness instructor, but then I made a serious amount of money in a very short space of time.” Three years ago, he created a bank account and deposited into it £1,000 to fund his poker. Soon he was able to regularly withdraw a monthly salary of £200. Before long he gave up his job to turn to poker full-time. Needless to say, for every poker tale of rags to riches there is another ending in ruin.

Former mayor Jayne Yeomans was jailed last month for stealing almost £65,000 to fund her online poker addiction. In an effort to cover her tracks, the 49-year-old forged her husband’s signature and remortgaged their house to raise £25,000 to pay some of it back. Kara Scott, who hosts the television coverage online of the PokerStars European Poker tour, plays at least three hours of online poker a day. She thinks cases such as Yeomans’ are not representative and give a misleading impression of the world of online poker players. “I think there are people out there with really addictive personalities who get addicted to anything,” she says. “Some people are always going to take it too far.

Thankfully, there are organisations out there [such as GamCare.org.uk] you can get in touch with. And with most online poker sites you can select the option to deny yourself. You effectively tell the site about your problem and they will block you for six months or a year so that you can’t get back on.” As a condition of handing out poker licenses, the British government’s Gambling Commission insists poker companies encourage socially responsible gambling. Operators must verify people’s ages before allowing them to play (in the UK players must be 18 or over) and provide as much information about socially responsible gambling on their websites as possible.

Players are encouraged to contact a charity such as GamCare if they feel they have an unhealthy interest in online gambling (or are using it to escape from their problems, become restless when they are not playing, or continually try to stop but can’t). Virgin Games is licenced and regulated by the Alderney Gambling Control Commission, the Channel Islands’ own regulatory body for poker. Boyd is confident that for him, gambling is only a positive thing, and that he has found a way of making his online habit work for him. “My priorities are my wife and three kids. I have luckily been able to buy a new house and that is a great thing to have at my stage in life. My online poker playing is a wee bit of fun.

So far, it has been very good to me. It just seems to be common sense for me to keep going. My wife went to university three years ago and hopes to start a new job in finance. All in all, she has been very supportive.” Playing at home also has advantages for Scott. “I can see how coming to somewhere like Newcastle to compete in a traditional poker tournament with lots of burly men might be intimidating to some women,” she says. “That fear is definitely circumnavigated by playing online. And you do get a few men who do some really inappropriate things. Yesterday there was a drunk man among the crowd of people asking for my autograph. He asked me to autograph his penis. I said no. What I should have said is, ‘Do you want me to initial it?’”

Poker people: Winners and losers

* Chris Moneymaker, an American accountant, won a seat at the 2003 World Series of Poker after playing a satellite tournament in the PokerStars online poker room. It cost him $39 to enter the first game; he ended up netting the $2.5m first prize at the global tournament. “It's a contentious issue whether poker is actually gambling,” he says.

* Zachary Gruneberg, a 19-year-old player from Pennsylvania, dropped out of university last month to pursue a career as a professional poker player. In January he won $250,000 at Australia’s 2009 Aussie Millions Poker Championship. He’s too young to gamble legally in the US, so instead, he spends his time playing online. “There'd be days where I'd play 10-plus hours of poker online at school,” he says. “While you're playing, you can do so much other stuff. You can watch a TV show, talk to your friends, be on Facebook. It's all about multi-tasking.”

* Roy ‘the Boy’ Brindley, born in Dorking, Surrey, left a career training greyhounds to win £1m in online poker over an eight-year period. In his autobiography, ‘Life’s a Gamble’, he admits that gambling addiction has rendered him homeless at points in his life. Nevertheless: “To me, it’s massively satisfying. I was never good at sports and was 30 when I discovered a game that I could win at,” he says.

* Christopher Proudfoot, a finance controller, siphoned £1m of his employer’s money into his bank account between December 2004 and January 2008 to fund his habit. The 28-year-old fraudster, who now lives with his parents in Inverness, pleaded guilty in February to embezzling the cash. “The problem with some of these sites is when you win big they have their own way of getting it back,” he says. “When you’ve won a fair amount of money you can’t easily get it back. They don’t let you withdraw without letting everyone you are playing with no, so you carry on competing.” (Credit: The Independent)

Lara Croft's naked rumour highlights role of women in gaming, by Gabrielle Dunlevy - 21st January 2009

If the internet rumours are to be believed, Lara Croft, the most famous woman in the video game world, will be showing even more skin in her next adventure.

It's a hot issue in the video games industry, which is just waking up to the female market even though women have always been enthusiastic players.

It is estimated that around 40 per cent of players on the world's biggest online games, like World of Warcraft and The Sims Online, are women, and the industry is finally taking them seriously.

Nintendo's enormously popular Wii console, with sales of more than 25 million units worldwide, has succeeded in luring a new audience by offering trivia, musical and sporting games with a family-friendly feel.

And with its handheld DS system, Nintendo has directly reached out to women, featuring Olivia Newton-John and Symantha Perkins in its Australian advertisements for Brain Training - a puzzle game.

But at the same time as Nintendo takes off, the gaming industry is feeling the impact of the economic downturn.

Job losses

Studios in Australia and overseas are beginning to shed jobs, and Eidos, the makers of Tomb Raider, is not immune.

Eidos sacked 30 employees at Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics and its shares fell 25 per cent in one day after it revised down its profit forecast, due to lower than expected sales of Tomb Raider: Underworld.

The internet is now swirling with rumours the next Tomb Raider game will be rated M rather than T (for teen) - meaning it will be either sexier or bloodier.

Gamers are venting their concerns on blogs, worried creators could exploit their already buxom heroine Lara Croft, famously played by Angelina Jolie in the film spin-off.

"I've been a fan of the series ever since the first title but isn't this just a sign of desperation? How about making an awesome game without having to pull stunts like this?" one fan wrote.

Game On

The image of a gun-toting Croft is being used to promote an exhibition of video games at the State Library of Queensland, called Game On.

As part of the exhibition, women from the industry plan a gathering to talk about how their influence is re-shaping the gaming world.

Penny Sweetser, a senior game designer with 2K Australia, said the options for women gamers should increase as more women worked in the industry.

"I guess it's easy to cater for an existing market than to create a new market - it's easy to make the types of games that have been made before than to take risks and create a new genre for a new market," she said.

Ms Sweetser said although Nintendo had "hit the jackpot" when it began targeting the female market, there was still little female input in games development.

"Often you're not developing for (your own demographic), you're developing for what you perceive your target market to be and (creating characters) who they would like to see," she said.

Hannah Crosby, an artist with THQ Studios Australia, agreed that women were still getting a man's take on women's games.

At Brisbane's THQ studios, which employs about 100 staff, Ms Crosby is one of only five women.

"Because there's not many women working on games I guess we're getting a very male take on what they think women want to play," she said.

Ms Crosby said "pink games" were another burgeoning segment of the market, encompassing games about dolls, puppies and shopping, and sometimes sold on pink consoles.

Thinking pink

They were usually designed by men and marketed to mothers buying games viewed as safe and friendly for their daughters, she said.

"But girls who like to play games have taken things into their own hands by playing online games that aren't made for women, but aren't definitely only for men," she said.

Both women view Lara Croft as an icon in the industry and in wider pop culture, and say they will watch her future appearance with interest.

Ms Crosby, a strong advocate for female characters in games, said she'd learned to live with Croft's appearance because of her other heroic qualities.

"It's the sort of thing women have overlooked to this point because otherwise you wouldn't play anything," she said.

"Getting women into games at all at the moment is the first step before anything like what they are wearing or look like."

Both women say "casual" games like those offered by Nintendo are best placed to survive the economic downturn, because they are cheaper to produce than "epic" games with hours of production behind them.

And both hope Lara Croft gets through this next stage with her clothes still on.

Wired Women, a talk on women in the world of gaming, will be held at the State Library of Queensland, South Bank, on January 28 at 6pm. Tickets are $12 and must be booked from qtix or by calling 136 246.

Hugh Jackman and co-stars in new Wolverine video game

28th March 2009

Developers of a new X-Men Origins: Wolverine video game have revealed more details about what players can expect.

Raven Software is creating The Uncaged Edition of the game. The Wolverine games will be released by Activision on the platforms Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS and Sony PSP system, with The Uncaged Edition on Xbox 360 and PS3.

Raven's Dan Vondrak told Superhero Hype: "The Uncaged Edition is the most pure vision of Wolverine translated from the comics to the video game. If you want to see Wolverine being a total badass - visceral, gritty - the way he was meant to be seen, it's in the Uncaged Edition. The other platforms are by other developers.

"We know Wolverine games in the past have missed the mark and we saw the Wolverine game as a chance to redefine him. The Wolverine you're going to see is gritty and brutal - true to character."

He added: "We have all the major characters from the movie in our game. We even do a little extra and bring our own characters you don't see in the movie. We also got the actors to help out with the game. Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Liev Schreiber (Victor Creed aka Sabretooth) and Will.i.am (John Wraith) all play the characters in our game, doing the voices and we got full body scans as well.

"We rolled into production before the game was tied to the movie. Once the movie came into the picture we went back and forth with 20th Century Fox on the script. In the end we've got 90 per cent of the movie story in our game and an additional 30-40 per cent content that's not in the movie that we as fans wanted to see. We wanted to deliver the movie experience but also go beyond it."

He said the game would show Wolverine's ability to regenerate from injury although if he suffers enough damage to vital organs, he falls unconscious and the game will be over.

It also includes some of the character's comic book costumes (including the classic blue and yellow outfit) and audio recordings which relate the character's backstory.

An additional game level called The Weapon X Arena goes behind the scenes on how all the fighting and killing in the game was created and tested.

The game is in shops on May 1 to coincide with the opening of the film.

More information and images can be found at the official website.

Online Gaming contributes to PC Gaming Market

25th March 2009

The nonprofit corporation PC Gaming Alliance has released a new report regarding the PC gaming industry earlier this week. The aim of the study was to identify the industries best performing areas for the year ending 2008 and to also discover what areas were experiencing the greatest growth.

In the report PC Gaming Alliance found that despite contrary belief PC’s remain the world’s leading gaming platform, outperforming other consoles.

However a very large percentage of this is due to online gaming in Asia.

According to the PCGA “the annual PC market is now worth $11 billion worldwide”, more than any of the leading consoles.

The report was intended to identify the most thriving area for 2008, and found that, the market in Europe and the US was worth more than $6 billion alone.

It also found that Russia, India, Brazil, Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe were strong growth areas.

In it’s aim to identify successful areas, the report deemed that there was increased importance in online digital distribution via services, and in free games.

It came as no surprise however that one of the largest growth areas in the market, was the growth of multiplayer online games.

Review: Street Fighter IV, by Jason Hill - Fairfax - 5th March 2009

Street Fighter IV
PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
PG
RRP $120
Rating: 4.5 out of 5

"Here comes a new challenger" - 18 years after Street Fighter II kicked off the fighting game boom. And what a triumphant return to form it is.

This is a meticulously crafted brawler that both clumsy newcomers and pugilism purists can appreciate and enjoy. Not only it is visually stunning, but it also introduces some smart additions and control refinements that accommodate a wider audience while still ensuring vast tactical depth.

Button bashing will get you nowhere, but powerful combination hits and special attacks are now easier to perform, putting the focus on strategic planning rather than physical dexterity. A unique, unblockable focus attack for each character is another terrific addition, which is not too difficult to perform yet can help turn the tide in a close tussle.

Anyone can have fun, but fights between skilled players are particularly exciting and dramatic. Solo players can hone their skills in a basic training zone before tackling the Arcade mode, which features six preliminary bouts, a fight against your character's rival, and a final showdown against boss Seth in a secret laboratory.

Meanwhile, the Challenge mode includes tests like limited time or health.

Some might be disappointed there is not more variety or innovation in the play modes, but online support has been particularly well integrated. Players can choose to let online rivals from around the world challenge them at any time, replicating the arcade experience at home.

During our testing, fights rarely suffered from crippling lag. It is a pity there are no online tournaments or spectator options, though.

The new fighters will not be as much loved as the veterans in the 25-strong roster, but the detail and personality imbued in each character is superb.

Potty-mouthed video game grabs profanity record - 17th March 2009

A video game called "House of the Dead: Overkill" has been named the most profane ever by Guinness World Records, a spokesman said Monday.

The well-received game, which is playable on the Nintendo Wii console, features the F word 189 times, equating to three percent of the all of the game's dialogue.

"It is a dubious honour to receive such an accolade working in an industry where so often the fruits of your labours are derided and dismissed for being puerile or irresponsible," said Jonathan Burroughs, the game's writer.

"But in the case of 'The House Of The Dead: Overkill', a little puerility was the order of business," added Burroughs of the game, which is published by Sega.

"Parodying the profane excess of grindhouse cinema was (game developer) Headstrong Games' objective and I am flattered that this record acknowledges that we not only rose to that challenge, but entirely exceeded it."

As a result of its award, it will be short-listed for inclusion in the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition next year.

"House of the Dead: Overkill" was given a 8.0 rating out of 10 by video game website Gamespot, which said it "reinvents the aging shooter series for the better with an over-the-top grindhouse theme that resonates in its every aspect, from the hilarious story to the fantastic vintage soundtrack".

According to a spokesman for Guinness World Records, the film "Casino" holds the record for most expletives in a single film, with 422 instances of the F word, equating to approximately 2.4 times per minute.

"It's a mark of the times," said spokesman Gaz Deaves.

"This record category pre-existed for movies, music and television, but 'The House Of The Dead: Overkill' is the first video game to be awarded the title in the gamer's edition," he added.
